Synopsis
Lulu is a girl who lives together with her parents in Barcelona, Spain. Like most children, she is full of curiosity about life and, like most girls + boys, she doesn't like going to bed. There are so many better things to do with one's time than sleeping. She wishes the sun would never set then she would never have to go to sleep. One evening, after her parents have tucked her into bed, she receives a curious visit. A magical bird, with an appearance unlike any other bird, knocks at her window and introduces himself as Kukulu: fulfiller of dreams, world traveller and Lulu's special friend for this one night. He invites her to travel with him, following the course of the sun around the world, visiting different countries and making new friends. Lulu agrees and together they embark on a thrilling journey where for one long night the sun does not set for Lulu.
They visit countries as diverse and different from each other as Norway, Ireland, America, Brazil, Australia, Japan, China, Thailand, India, Tanzania, Egypt and Finland. In each country, Kukulu introduces Lulu to a friend of his, another child. And each child has his own special friend, an animal typical to the respective country, which in turn he or she introduces to Lulu. The children tell Lulu the story of their friendship with their animal friend, how they met each other and what brought them together. Each story focuses on one particular aspect of what friendship is all about. Jimmy, the little American cowboy tells Lulu how his friendship with Tashunka, the wild mustang could not be forced by him but rather needed to develop in freedom. Aino, the little Norwegian girl's friendship with an elk baby accentuates the caring part in a friendship. Tiffany, the red-haired Irish girl expresses her friendship by saving Peppers from being captured. And Moyo's friendship with his giraffe friend in Tanzania is based on friends learning from each other.
When Lulu returns home at the end of one long day, she has not only made a dozen new friends all over the world as well as having found a best friend in Kukulu, she has also developed a deeper understanding of what friendship is all about, each story having been like a piece of a jigsaw puzzle that, fit together, resulted in a beautiful picture of friendship.
